If we're honest, many of us learned to pray by asking God for things.
We pray when we need help. We pray when we're facing a difficult situation. We pray when someone we love is hurting. There is nothing wrong with that. Scripture tells us to bring our requests to God.
But prayer is meant to be so much more than a list of requests.
Imagine if every conversation you had with a friend consisted of asking them for something. Eventually, that relationship would feel one-sided. Relationships grow through communication, listening, and spending time together.
The same is true with God.
One of the things I have learned in my walk with Christ is that prayer is not just about talking to God. It is also about spending time with Him.
Sometimes I come to God with a long list of things I want Him to do. Other times I simply sit quietly and thank Him for who He is. Sometimes I worship. Sometimes I ask questions. Sometimes I do not know what to say at all.
What I have discovered is that prayer becomes much richer when it moves beyond requests and becomes relationship.
Jesus modeled this for us throughout the Gospels. He often withdrew from the crowds to spend time alone with the Father (Luke 5:16). If Jesus made time for prayer, how much more do we need it?
Prayer is where our faith grows.
It is where we learn to trust God when we do not understand what He is doing. It is where we surrender our plans and seek His will. It is where we find strength for the journey ahead.
Philippians 4:6-7 says:
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
Notice that Paul does not just mention requests. He also mentions thanksgiving.
Prayer is not only about what we need from God. It is also about recognizing who He is and what He has already done.
Spiritual growth does not happen overnight. It happens one day at a time as we spend time in God's Word, seek Him in prayer, and learn to trust Him more deeply.
The goal is not to become perfect.
The goal is to know Him better.
And prayer is one of the greatest gifts God has given us to help us do just that.
